Osula and Barnes strike as Newcastle pile pressure on lacklustre Palace

The opening 45 minutes were poor. The pass completion rate stood at a mere 72.8%, though it seemed even lower. Only two attempts found the target. The sun intermittently peeked from behind the clouds, only to retreat again, seemingly dismayed. The worst part for Crystal Palace is that, from their perspective, this was actually the brighter period.

Newcastle showed significant improvement after the interval. Will Osula converted a Jacob Murphy cross two minutes into the second half, Joe Willock had a goal disallowed for a narrow offside call five minutes later, and Harvey Barnes finished off a slick passing sequence six minutes after that. A chorus of boos from the home crowd confirmed what was already apparent. Fifteen minutes of genuine football had been sufficient to secure the victory, leaving Pierre Sage under considerable strain.
